Prior to the shooting, Whitman murdered his wife and mother. He then proceeded to the University of Texas Tower, where he opened fire on people below from the observation deck. He killed 16 people and wounded 31 others before he was shot and killed by police officers Ramiro Martinez and Houston McCoy.
Whitman's motives for the shooting remain unclear, but a note he left suggested he was struggling with his mental health and requested an autopsy be performed on his brain after his death to see if there was a physical reason for his actions.
